Revolutionizing Primary and Secondary Education: A Journey with Oppia

Introduction:

In the ever-evolving landscape of education, technology stands as a powerful tool for change. As a computer scientist, I've always been on the lookout for innovative tools to enhance students' learning experiences using technology. Recently, I embarked on a journey with Oppia, an educational app designed to revolutionize the way we teach and learn. In this blog post, I'll share my experiences and insights gained from integrating Oppia into my community.

The Discovery:

My journey with Oppia began when I was approved for the Outreachy contribution stage. Oppia's educational application was one of the projects available for contribution. After reviewing the requirements for contributing, I realized its potential benefits for my neighborhood, schools, and the entire community. Intrigued by its promise of personalized and interactive learning experiences, I decided to explore further. What immediately caught my attention was its user-friendly interface and the plethora of customizable learning modules covering various subjects and topics.

The Journey:

Excited by the possibilities, I wasted no time in integrating Oppia into my daily activities. I started within my immediate environment, using the application to teach my aunt's children. After witnessing their engagement and interest sparked by the easy learning interface, cartoon characters, and Question and Answer sections, I decided to extend my reach to schools in my community.

I visited Three (3) schools namely, 

1. IMACULLATE PRIMARY SCHOOL OMOKU
2. STAFF NUSREY AND PRIMARY SCHOOL OMOKU (SNAPS) 
3. SEAT OF GREATNESS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OMOKU. 

Personalized Learning:

One of the most striking features of Oppia is its ability to facilitate personalized learning, allowing students to learn at their own pace. This feature provided me with the opportunity to tailor instruction based on individual progress and performance.

Engagement and Motivation:

As any educator will attest, keeping students engaged can be a daunting task. However, Oppia proved to be a game-changer in this regard. The app's interactive nature, coupled with its visually appealing interface, captured the attention of even the most reluctant learners. Additionally, the inclusion of pidgin English in the app alone appealed to many students. Whether it was solving puzzles or engaging in storytelling, these students were actively involved and motivated to learn.

Another advantage of Oppia is the availability of subjects such as Programming. Programming is not commonly taught in many schools, especially in communities like Omoku in Rivers state, Nigeria. I was thrilled to receive feedback from students who expressed their interest in learning about programming languages like Python but didn't know where to start. The joy they experienced when they realized they could gain programming knowledge interactively through Oppia was palpable.

Real-time Feedback and Assessment:

Oppia has had a significant impact not only in the schools I visited but also in my household. There is already promising progress in the math skills of my aunt's children. In a community where educational opportunities are limited, Oppia has provided a means for students to utilize their phones for constructive learning purposes.

The reception of Oppia has been overwhelmingly positive among those I introduced it to. Schools are eager to incorporate the app into their curriculum, and some have even expressed interest in installing it on their computer lab systems.

During my journey, I gathered valuable observations and feedback from teachers, students, and parents. Some of the key feedback includes:

1. The content available on the app downloaded from the Play Store should be consistent with the web version, as the latter appears to offer more comprehensive information.
2. Parents expressed a desire for more Nigerian history content to educate their children.
3. Suggestions were made to use more Nigerian names and places instead of foreign currency symbols like dollars, as it would make the content more relatable to students.
4. It was suggested that Oppia would be even more beneficial if subjects could be accessed offline, addressing potential data challenges.

Conclusion:

Introducing Oppia to my community has been a transformative experience. From personalized learning to increased engagement, Oppia has emerged as a beacon of innovation in education. As we navigate the evolving landscape of education, tools like Oppia continue to empower both teachers and students alike. I am enthusiastic about the future of education and the role that technology, exemplified by Oppia, will play in shaping it.
